The Tewksbury Board of Health voted unanimously to advance a draft Kratom regulation to public hearing. The proposed regulation would prohibit manufacture, distribution, sale and offering for sale of all Kratom products in Tewksbury. Chairperson Melissa Braga stated that the Health Department lacks current staffing and budget capacity to effectively inspect and enforce regulations distinguishing natural from synthetic Kratom products, since items are not subject to consistent third-party testing or standardized labeling.
The Board also unanimously approved a new policy allowing Board requests to Town Counsel to be coordinated through the Board Chair and Director of Public Health without prior Town Manager approval.
