Finance Committee Presses Shawsheen on Budget Costs
Other Committee · Meeting of September 21, 2026
Tewksbury Finance Committee presses Shawsheen Valley on revised $430,000 budget cut and rising assessment costs. Administrators, identified only as Tony and Ian, told the committee Shawsheen's FY24 per-pupil spending of $30,294 ran $5,641 above the five-town sending average of $24,653, citing specialized shops and higher rates of student need. One member warned Tewksbury's per-student assessment has grown 6.2 percent annually against a 3.89 percent levy limit, saying "I don't think that's sustainable." The district reported 1,300 students, $1.89 million earned through cooperative education in the Class of 2026, and an average teacher salary of $113,305.
The committee also noted Tewksbury has lost $1.7 million in grants over MBTA Communities Act non-compliance, and unanimously approved its August 18 minutes.
